Japanese has a specific term for when we shake our leg or shake our knee as we're sitting down. And it's called 貧乏揺すり- Binbou Yusuri, which roughly translates to "Poor man's shake."
Why the "poor"? There are several theories:

1) It's depicting a poor man with not enough clothing shivering in cold.

2) It's depicting loan officer's shaking legs as he's waiting to get back what he's owned from the poor.

However the term has come about, the shake has a bad rap in Japan. I remember my mom would get pissed and yell at my poor man's shake. I couldn't help it. It just happens.

The premise of "Devilman" is simple - defeat demons by becoming one. The 70's popular animation was adaptated from the "Devilman" comic book series which chronicled a simple school boy who becomes a part-time "Devil" and fights against demon clans about to take over the earth.

Rooting for the "Devil" sounds odd now, but as a kid, I didn't care. I just wanted to see Devilman kicking other demons' asses.
I suppose it's similar to the show "Dexter" where we find ourselves rooting for the serial killer.

Not all the Superhero shows were successful back in 70's. To be fair though, there were more than two dozen superhero shows produced between 1972 and 1973. Here's a show that only ran for a season called the "Tetsujin Tiger Seven"- 鉄人タイガーセブン. The production team must have felt pretty confident following the final season of a pretty successful show called "Kaiketsu Lion Maru- 快傑ライオン丸. There were three major differences between the two shows;
  1. Main character's head is changed from lion to tiger.
  2. Ride of choice is changed from a horse to the motorcycle.
  3. Period piece to a modern age.
Though the show was not embraced among kids, its legacy lives on as one of the more daring shows today. Here are some of the examples of innovative and carefree writing;
  1. As the main character morphs into Tiger Seven, he abandons his motorcycle, which goes on to run over a small child.
  2. A villain from "lost continent" befriends a little girl and dies together as they hold hands.
  3. Tiger Seven puts on his "special glove," but finishes the villain with his kick.
The show deserves a come-back.

Enjoy the short clip.

Who doesn't like Doraemon, right?

The earless cat has time traveled from the future to help a boy named Nobita with his less than steller life. During its running, Doraemon has introduced numerous gadgets to help Nobita cope through his hardships.

This particular episode, "Human Amputation Machine" is one of the more peculiar episodes in that, it's gory and almost disturbing.

The “senpai and kōhai” relationship is an integral part of growing up and living in Japan. It’s a mentor system woven into all types of social settings including school, sports teams, and business settings.

It goes without saying in Japan that freshman are expected to behave a certain way towards students in grade levels higher than their own. And any student, regardless of age, must speak politely to his teachers. This custom continues as you venture into the business world where respect is strictly shown to coworkers with more experience.

You can imagine how this could get complicated once you're faced with an ambiguous situation. For example, there have been times when my good friend introduced me to a friend of his for the first time, and I spoke to him using タメ語 - Tamego (casual language). Then I later found out he’s much more “Senpai” in age than me. Looking back, my first clue should have been the honorific “san” (“Mister”) my friend placed behind the name of the person during the introduction.

As you watch the following video, you might not understand or appreciate the severity of DOWNTOWN's inexcusable behaviors in their younger days. But if you can grasp how rude it would be to address someone senior to you by their first name without using an honorific label, then you get the idea.

(Spoiler alert)
In his book called 遺書 - "The Will", Hitoshi Matsumoto unabashedly shares his thoughts about DOWNTOWN’s ambition to achieve national fame when they were only known throughout the Osaka region. Matsumoto admits that if it weren't for Hamada's reckless behavior on nationally televised shows, they would have never received the exposure they were looking for. So many “comedy duo’s” were competing for air time that Hamada’s disregard for the “senpai and kōhai” rules attracted attention from audiences. And in retrospect, it worked for them as the comedic genius of Matsumoto and Hamada spread like wildfire—their popularity soaring within only a few years.

(More spoiler)
The first "victim" of DOWNTOWN depicted in the video is Yasushi Yokoyama who Matsumoto also mentions in "The Will." As DOWNTOWN was coming up in the Osaka region, Yasushi Yokoyama criticized DOWNTOWN'S Manzai (talk) as "just two low-lives riffing shit". I'm sure that struck a nerve with DOWNTOWN, and Matsumoto never hid the fact that he disliked Yokoyama for it.

世界の果てまでイッテQ - Sekai no Hatemade Itte Q - roughly translates to "Going to the end of the world," has been one of the more popular shows in Japan since 2007. The show introduces viewers a series of off-beat events happening all over the world by having the celebrity participate in them. With lots of clever editing and abundance of popup captions with sound effects, it certainly makes these foreign events intriguing and fun.

This clip is part of the "Best of" episode.

Every year from 1990 through 2003, the Downtown duo, Matsumoto and Hamada bet against each other on the Japanese baseball championship series. They were also known to bet on which team, red or white, would be the victor of the annual-year-end singing competition on NHK channel.
The loser, of course, was subjected to some hilarious punishment, or Batsu.

The following clip chronicles what kind of Batsu Matsumoto had to engage in 1990, 1992, 1993, and 1994.

(Subbed) Gaki No Tsukai - The Five Essential Elements of Comedy

In Japan, it is understood that there are five cooking ingredients which need to be added in order:

  1. 砂糖 - Sato - Suga
  2. 塩 - Shio - Salt
  3. 酢 - Su - Vinegar
  4. 醤油 - Shoyu - Soy Sauce
  5. 味噌 - Miso
The order in which these are added into, whatever (Japanese) meal you're cooking, is very crucial because later the ingredient is listed, more likely their property can change from the heat; As in, you never want to boil the Miso. A big no-no.

Anyhow, this is a yet another hilarious talk between Matsumoto and Hamada about "being older," and Matsumoto talking about the five essential elements in comedy.

グルメリポート(Gourmet Report) - Foodie reporters are all over Japanese TV shows. Almost all morning and afternoon news shows would have segment dedicated to reporting on (usually) the local restaurant's popular food.

Popular foodie reporters have mastered their acting skills in reacting as if they've just had the best meal in the world. I personally enjoy the close-up shot of food held up by chopsticks - shaking ever so slightly. And the fat dripping off of the food.

びっくり- The word "Bikkuri" means surprise. The following Gaki No Tsukai episode decides who can deliver the best Bikkuri faces and scores the most points based on five judging elements.

石焼き芋屋さん - Yakiimo Truck (roasted sweet potato truck) is sort of like an ice-cream truck that comes around in your neighborhood with ever-so creepy monotone serenade of "Come get your roasted sweet potato~!," blasting and testing the limit of installed megaphones.
The piping hot potato is usually served wrapped in aluminum foil. And once the potato is hand snapped in half or 1/3, the first careful bite is nothing short of greatness, provided you're freezing your butt off in a middle of the frigid cold winter in Japan.
